If you don't have plants indoors but have a patch of mint or basil in the garden, pull a bunch of leaves and pop them in a glass to act as a vase and pop that by the window instead. "You can also plant them in your garden to keep insects even further away," adds Kameliya. The simple trick uses water to repel flies from entering the house. The bag of water is multiplied in a fly's eyes and will therefore appear to be a bigger body of water to repel them from approaching.

Clothes moths are small, beige-colored flying bugs that grow around 0.5” (13 mm). They are identified by their narrow wings that have fine hairs along the margins. All you need to do is pour apple cider vinegar into a glass, so it’s one-quarter full. Then poke a few holes in the plastic and place it on your kitchen countertop. As their name suggests, drain flies inhabit drains, breeding and living in slimy filth. Due to their habitat, drain flies also go by the names sewer flies, sewer gnats, and sink flies.

Housefly (Musca domestica)

Although fruits flies and gnats are common household flies, other flying bugs can become a significant nuisance in homes. For example, some species of flying insects are commonly found in kitchens, whereas others are where you have houseplants. Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are extremely small (1/10 inch) flying insects that selectively lay their eggs in decaying fruit and certain other food, such as mushrooms. While it can be disconcerting when a small swarm of fruit flies suddenly appears around a bowl of fruit or bunch of bananas, it should bother you less than a housefly infestation. Fruit flies are essentially harmless and they do not spread disease as do ordinary houseflies. Imagine fruit flies buzzing as you cook dinner, fungus gnats hovering over your houseplants or nasty creatures lingering in your kitchen sink.

Lavender oil has been used for centuries as a insect deterrent including for clothing to prevent moths from eating away at them. You can buy essential oils from any good homeopathic shop but you can also make your own. If you have maggots, you need to locate the source as quickly as possible so you can kill them before they turn into flies. But there are many, if not hundreds, of places in your home and on your property where maggots could be hatching from fly eggs.

This method is helpful when you find them in your garbage bin or another container. Although many people think of chemical insecticides first for any pest control, chemical control should be avoided if possible. Through overuse, the common housefly has gradually developed resistance to many chemicals, which means that increasingly heavy applications are necessary to kill them. While pesticides may make some sense outdoors, it's best to avoid them indoor spaces whenever possible. "Invest in a fly screen door or mesh curtain to protect your home from flies with ease," suggests Jordan Foster, a pest control expert at Fantastic Pest Control. This solution allows you to leave the windows and doors open and not be quite so restrictive with having food out on the counter inside the house.

Furthermore, overly ripe fruits and rotting vegetables should be put in the outdoor trash. You can usually identify fruit flies because they hover around fruit bowls, trash cans, and spilled sugary liquids. As the fruit becomes overripe and starts to spoil, you may see the number of fruit flies increasing. They are also called vinegar flies because they are attracted to fermented liquids.

While I wouldn’t want to live in a house like that, I wouldn’t mind some of the details, which have a very decadent, feminine feel. I’m hoping to bring that in through some of the lights I’ve chosen for our home, especially in the foyer. We’re used to seeing pictures of colorful walls paired with a crisp, white trim. Especially in kids’ rooms, I think it can be really fun to turn that notion on its head by painting the trim a color that ties in with the surrounding wallpaper. I’m operating in a very limited capacity when it comes to interior design. I still take on a select clientele—a few every year—because I don’t have time to take on very many projects. I’m known for a specific color palette and I do things my own way, and if I don’t find what I’m looking for, I make it myself. It seems kind of crazy, but I think I ordered some Kravet fabric for a client and it took three months to get there. What I realized was, “Oh, I actually have a real opportunity here. I had just moved back to the U.S. in 2011—my husband got into business school, and we moved to Philadelphia, so our lives were just totally crazy, but it was a really fun time. I was so lucky because it’s so much harder for businesses to break into social media now, and at the time, I don’t even remember how quickly my Instagram handle was growing, but it didn’t require that much effort. It was like, “Oh, just post a fuzzy picture of something and throw a filter on it.” But it was exciting—I was 25, and there were not a lot of designers selling textiles online and making it accessible for people. That was definitely the sweet spot, the void I was trying to fill. As a designer, I recognized how challenging it can be to actually get product and fabrics—at the time, you had to fax in an order. And then getting it on to a website and making it a functional e-commerce site—because that was before Shopify—and you just had to wing it.

For over a quarter of a century, Kenneth has forged a new dimension in the world of “Ultra Luxury” design. The mission of BHLI is the pursuit of perfection through luxury and beauty. As much as I try to plan, I have to remember that moments of creativity strike randomly. My best “ah-ha” moments usually result from surprise elements at some point in the process. In a serendipitous way, our pièce de résistance solved this kitchen challenge. Because we wanted the range to take center stage, we chose to place it between two islands.

The countertops, a soothing calacatta marble, will seamlessly flow into the backsplash. That’s especially true at our house, where five children and two adults each have their own activities and agendas. Now I have a marketing director that puts together the editorial calendar based on sales and seasonal events. Then I have a marketing manager in addition to [handle] other responsibilities involving e-commerce—she does the scheduling and [coordination of] collaborative posts. I’ve had people who’ve helped me with the writing, but I always edit things, so I still kind of tweak all the copy. With my children, that’s one of my fears—I don’t want them to be insecure or have mental health struggles because they’re growing up in this world with social media, with so much use of technology. So I realized that I have a real life, a real family and real kids, and they’re messy and I can’t do it all, and I think people appreciate that. I certainly appreciate the kindness and the support that I gained from that connection with my customers and clients and friends, so it’s a good support network for me.
